Tracking brown bears in fresh snow on Kodiak — what the tracks told us

One of the strangest and best mornings I have had outdoors: fresh snow on Kodiak and a clean set of brown bear tracks crossing our route. We followed them at a respectful distance long enough to read the story — where the bear stopped, where it dug, where it changed direction when it hit our scent line from the day before. Things fresh snow teaches you that dirt never will: - Stride length and drag marks tell you speed and how recently it moved. - Melted, rounded edges mean the track is older than it looks at first glance. - A track that suddenly widens or turns usually means the animal caught something — wind direction matters more than distance.
