Race S

The Suunto Race S scales down the burly footprint of the original Race into a compact 45mm frame designed for smaller wrists and weight-conscious endurance athletes. Retaining the bright 1.32-inch AMOLED display and physical digital crown, this model swaps the bulk of typical mountain watches for a svelte profile that disappears under jacket cuffs. The stainless steel bezel and fiber-reinforced chassis lend it a premium, dense hand-feel that makes plastic-bodied competitors in the same price tier feel cheap by comparison.

On the trail, the watch shines through its navigation chops. Suunto includes free, detailed offline topographic maps that load cleanly and pair with dual-frequency GNSS tracking. Signal acquisition is swift and breadcrumb tracking remains steadfast through dense timber and canyon walls. The digital crown eliminates the headache of manipulating a touchscreen with soaked gloves or sweaty fingers, making zooming into trail junctions natural on the fly. The optical heart rate sensor is reliable for steady-state efforts, though sharp interval work still exposes the limitations common to wrist-based sensors.

The inevitable compromise of the smaller case is battery capacity. While the larger Race can push through multi-day expeditions on a single charge, the Race S tops out around 30 hours in its highest-accuracy tracking mode. That is more than enough for a full mountain marathon or long weekend outings, but multi-day thru-hikes will require a top-up. For runners and hikers who prioritize wrist comfort, crisp cartography, and premium casing without paying top-tier flagship prices, the balance struck here is exceptionally sharp.
