What happened in "Subzero"

Episode 12 aired September 2, 2026. History's logline: Arctic cold pushes the final three to the brink as a series of critical medical checks threatens to end their runs just short of the finish. Battling prolonged isolation and starvation, each competitor makes desperate choices simply to survive another twenty-four hours.

Three left: Žiga Ogorelec, Aaron Barnard and Nero Buys, all past day 80 in the Beaufort Delta, roughly 125 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

The medical check is the real opponent now

At this stage nobody is being beaten by the wilderness in a dramatic way. They are being measured. Medics track body fat percentage, weight loss rate, resting heart rate, blood pressure and cognitive function, and a contestant who falls below threshold is removed whether or not they want to go. Season 13 had already shown the show will pull someone: Clementino Pedrosa was evacuated on day 21 with a resting heart rate of 34 bpm.

Three numbers decide these checks:

  • Body fat. Below a floor, the body starts consuming muscle, including cardiac muscle. This is the number that ends most deep runs.
  • Heart rate. Bradycardia is the body shutting down the furnace to save fuel.
  • Cognition. Judgement failures in subzero conditions are how survival situations become emergencies.

Why fat, not food, decided this season

Aaron Barnard was not short of protein. His trapline worked. But a hare-heavy diet is the textbook case of protein without fat, and the body cannot run indefinitely on it. He made it to day 87 and tapped from mental and physical exhaustion.

Nero Buys, 40, from Australia, still had fish coming in. His exit on day 85 was a decision rather than a collapse — he said he had achieved what he came for and wanted to see his family.

Žiga Ogorelec had banked big-game fat earlier in the season, and that is the whole difference. It is why he was still passing checks at day 90.

Subzero changes every task

Below zero Fahrenheit, everything costs more. Water has to be melted, which costs wood. Wood has to be gathered in a few hours of grey light. Wet gloves are dangerous rather than annoying. Traps freeze shut and nets ice over. Contestants at this point run the smallest possible daily loop and spend the rest of the time horizontal, conserving heat.

Heading into the finale

One episode remained: "Worlds Apart," the September 9, 2026 finale, where Nero left on day 85, Aaron tapped on day 87, and Žiga Ogorelec became the first Alone World Champion on day 90 with $500,000.
