Rooftop tent vs ground tent: honest cost per night
I did the math after two years and my rooftop tent works out to about $80 a night. It is faster to set up and terrible if you want to leave camp for the day. Regret is mild but real.

Cold mornings: the small stuff that fixed them
A jetboil in the vestibule for the first cup, dry socks stored in the sleeping bag, and a beanie I only wear to sleep. None of it is expensive and all of it changed how I feel at 6am. What is your trick?

Camping with a three-year-old — what actually works
Short drive, familiar food, a headlamp that is theirs, and a job to do at camp. We stopped trying to hike and started letting the kid run the campsite. Trips got dramatically better.

Cast iron at basecamp: worth the weight every time
A 10 inch skillet has cooked more good meals than any titanium pot I own. Car camping is the one place where heavy is allowed. Post your best cast-iron camp dinner.

Campsite etiquette is getting worse — or am I just old?
Generators at 10pm and music through a Bluetooth speaker three sites over. I have started choosing weekdays and it fixed most of it. Is there a polite way to say something that ever works?

Show your camp setup — here is mine after three years of tuning
Awning, a two-burner on a slide, and a plywood drawer system I built in a weekend. The biggest upgrade was not the rig, it was a good chair and a real pillow. What would you change?

Dual battery build for a week off-grid
100Ah LiFePO4, a DC-DC charger, and 200 watts on the roof runs a fridge indefinitely in summer. Winter with less sun is a different story. Happy to post the wiring diagram.

Best dispersed camping I found this year
A forest road spur in the Sawtooths with a creek fifty feet away and no one within a mile. Pack out everything, stay on existing sites, and it stays that way. Being vague on purpose but happy to share the general area.
