- How does draw length change arrow spine?
- Every inch of arrow length past the 28-inch chart baseline weakens dynamic spine by roughly 5 pounds of effective draw weight. A 60 lb bow with a 30-inch arrow reads like a 70 lb bow on the chart, so it needs a stiffer shaft.
- How much does point weight change spine?
- About 3 pounds of effective draw weight for every 25 grains away from the 100-grain baseline. Going from a 100 gr field point to a 200 gr single-bevel adds roughly 12 pounds of effective weight and often moves you a full spine group stiffer.
- Why does a recurve need a weaker arrow than a compound at the same weight?
- A compound is cut past centre and releases with a mechanical release, so the shaft barely has to bend around the riser. A recurve shot near centre needs about 5 pounds less effective spine, and a longbow shot off the shelf about 10 pounds less, because archer's paradox is much larger.
- Is a spine chart the final answer?
- No. A chart gets you to the right shaft to buy. Bare-shaft tuning or paper tuning tells you whether that shaft, with your release, rest, and point weight, actually flies straight. Always confirm before you fletch a full dozen.
