Tree skiing is the best part of the mountain and the town feels like a real place instead of a resort village. Nice, rolling, forgiving terrain overall. Winter Park: harder edge to it. Mary Jane is genuinely demanding — bumps, steeps, and terrain that will humble you. Easier to reach from Denver, and it gets cold and windy up top. Layering notes that apply to both: merino base, active insulation mid, hard shell over it, and a spare pair of gloves in the pack because wet gloves end your day faster than cold does. Which would you pick for a family trip versus a trip with strong skiers?
Nobody sweats, nobody sleeps in wet clothes, and everybody eats before bed. Almost every miserable winter night I have witnessed came from breaking one of those. Add yours.
Hot tent for basecamps and anything over two nights, four-season for anything I have to move fast in. Drying gear is worth the stove weight. Anyone doing hot tent solo regularly?
Two pads with a combined R-value over 8, a zero-degree bag with an overbag, and a hot water bottle at my feet. I stopped waking up cold at 3am. The pads mattered more than the bag.
Insulated bottles upside down, a wide-mouth so ice does not seal the lid, and warm drinks at every stop. Dehydration in the cold sneaks up and makes you colder. Simple fix, big difference.
Winter hikers walk under and across avalanche terrain constantly without thinking about it. A basic awareness course changed the routes I choose in March. Worth the weekend.
