Skiing Steamboat and Winter Park — how they actually compare

Skied both Steamboat and Winter Park and they have very different personalities. Steamboat: the snow quality is the draw. Tree skiing is the best part of the mountain and the town feels like a real place instead of a resort village. Nice, rolling, forgiving terrain overall. Winter Park: harder edge to it. Mary Jane is genuinely demanding — bumps, steeps, and terrain that will humble you. Easier to reach from Denver, and it gets cold and windy up top. Layering notes that apply to both: merino base, active insulation mid, hard shell over it, and a spare pair of gloves in the pack because wet gloves end your day faster than cold does. Which would you pick for a family trip versus a trip with strong skiers?
