The Asolo Freney Evo Mid GV is a solid contender for technical mountaineering and alpine climbing in a range of conditions. Built with a Schoeller K-Tech fabric upper and a Gore-Tex Insulated Comfort lining, it offers a good balance of durability and warmth for its weight class. We’ve found it adept at handling mixed terrain, from scrambling on rock to moderate ice. The boots are fairly stiff, as expected for their intended use, providing excellent support when front-pointing or edging on steep snow and ice. The Vibram Mulaz outsole, with its climbing zone at the toe, bites well into varied surfaces and offers enough precision for more technical sections.

At 680g per boot (men's size 9.5), it sits squarely in the lightweight alpine category, making it a good choice for those prioritizing agility and reduced fatigue on long approaches or fast-and-light ascents. The lacing system allows for precise adjustment, and we've experienced minimal heel lift, which is critical for preventing blisters and maintaining control. While designed for winter, the "Mid" in its name accurately reflects its thermal capacity; it's not a deep-winter expedition boot, but rather shines in shoulder-season alpine environments or for winter days that don't involve extreme cold. Its comparatively streamlined profile also helps it feel less cumbersome than bulkier alternatives.

Compared to fully rigid plastic boots, the Freney Evo Mid GV offers significantly better walkability and comfort without sacrificing too much support for C2-rated crampons. It’s a versatile option for the climber who wants one boot to cover technical rock, snow, and ice, but isn't planning on extended periods in sub-zero temperatures. Think high-alpine traverses, technical glacial approaches, and mixed climbing, rather than polar expeditions. Its construction and materials suggest good longevity, standing up to the abrasions of alpine environments reasonably well.
