BlueJacket

Built on Astral's Foam Tectonics architecture, the BlueJacket bridges the gap between technical sea kayaking and long-distance river touring. Instead of locking the torso inside a rigid shell, the front flotation panel articulates independently on a two-piece chassis. This floating setup eliminates the binding and deck interference common to traditional touring vests, making it an ideal choice for paddlers who spend hours rotating through rhythmic forward strokes.

The chassis pairs a tough ripstop nylon exterior with a blend of PVC-free Gaia and lightweight PE foam. On the water, the pocket layout is where the vest truly earns its keep. The central clamshell pocket drops forward to function like a small workbench, revealing organized compartments for radios, snacks, and folding knives, while fleece-lined pockets tucked behind the panel offer welcome warmth on freezing crossings. An internal sleeve accommodates a hydration bladder with cleanly routed shoulder channels that minimize snag hazards.

Because it relies on a side-entry buckle system rather than a full front zipper, donning and doffing requires slipping into the vest, which some paddlers find slightly cumbersome when wearing thick drysuit layers. It also eschews an integrated rescue harness, keeping it distinct from specialized whitewater rescue vests like the GreenJacket. However, for open-water sea touring, coastal exploration, and mixed flatwater expeditions, few vests balance uninhibited arm clearance and thoughtful gear organization this effectively.
