The Duckworth Comet Crew is a solid midweight base layer designed for active use in a range of conditions, and it handles everyday wear just as well. Its blend of 50% Montana-grown Merino wool and 50% recycled polyester is the key. You get the natural odor resistance and thermoregulation that Merino is known for, alongside the durability and quicker dry time that synthetics bring to the table. This hybrid approach strikes a good balance, making it more resilient to abrasion than pure Merino while still offering excellent comfort next-to-skin. We've worn it for multi-day trips and found it lives up to the promise of staying fresh longer.

Construction details are understated but effective. The flatlock stitching throughout is crucial for preventing chafing when carrying a pack or during extended movement, a detail often overlooked in lesser base layers. The fabric itself has a smooth face with a slightly brushed interior, providing a bit of loft for warmth without feeling bulky. While not the lightest base layer on the market, the Comet Crew packs down reasonably well for its warmth-to-weight ratio. It's a reliable piece that doesn't demand excessive care, holding its shape and resisting pilling better than some full-Merino options.

Compared to pure Merino, it's slightly less plush but gains significant toughness and faster drying, making it a stronger choice for activities where you might encounter more friction or need to wash and dry quickly on the go. Against full synthetics, it wins on odor control and comfort, especially over multiple days.
