It’s designed to shrug off heavy, wind-driven rain for extended periods, and in the field, it performs exactly as advertised. The fit is generous enough to accommodate insulation layers underneath, but not so baggy as to feel cumbersome when moving through brush or scrambling. We found the hood system particularly well-executed, cinching down tight around a cap or bare head, providing excellent peripheral vision while maintaining crucial protection.

Construction details are solid throughout. Seams are fully taped and the YKK Vislon zippers are waterproof and operate smoothly even with cold hands or gloves. Ventilation is handled by pit zips that are long enough to dump heat effectively during strenuous activity, preventing that clammy feeling often associated with fully waterproof shells. While not the lightest or most compressible jacket on the market, its weight is a fair trade-off for the level of protection it offers. It packs down reasonably well for its burly build, fitting into a backpack without taking up excessive space. For multi-day trips where you genuinely expect to encounter the worst Mother Nature can throw at you, its bulk is easily justified by its performance.

Compared to other high-performance shells in its price bracket, the Omen stands out for its sheer durability and unwavering protection. It might not have the hyper-breathability of some ultralight options, but that's not its design intent.
