A headlamp is a hands-free light worn on the forehead, rated in lumens for output and in hours for regulated runtime, and powered by a rechargeable cell, AAA batteries, or both.
Backpackers, hunters walking in before daylight, night paddlers, and anyone doing camp chores after dark in cold weather.
A regulated lamp holds brightness until the cell is nearly empty. Unregulated lamps fade steadily and overstate their headline lumens.
Flood for camp and cooking, spot for trail-finding and blood trailing, mixed for everything else.
Rechargeable is cheaper over time; AAA-compatible hybrids let you swap cells when it is -25 °C and the battery is dead.
Red preserves night vision and keeps you from blinding camp. A transport lock prevents pack drain.
| Use | Output needed | Beam | Power |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camp chores and reading | 50–200 lm | Flood + red | Rechargeable |
| Trail walking before dawn | 300–450 lm | Mixed | Hybrid rechargeable/AAA |
| Blood trailing and night hunting | 500–1,000 lm | Spot | Hybrid or external pack |
| Ultralight thru-hiking | 100–200 lm | Flood | Built-in cell, under 40 g |
| Deep-cold winter travel | 300–500 lm | Mixed | AAA lithium or body-worn pack |
| Class | Weight | High runtime | Regulated | Cold behavior |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ultralight (100–200 lm) | 35–60 g | 2–4 h | Partly | Fades fast |
| All-round (300–500 lm) | 75–110 g | 3–7 h | Yes | Good with lithium AAA |
| High output (800+ lm) | 150–220 g | 2–4 h | Yes | Good, battery on head |
| Rear-battery / reactive | 140–190 g | 5–10 h | Yes | Best — cell stays warm |
Lithium AAA cells outperform alkaline by a wide margin below freezing, and any rechargeable lamp lasts longer with the battery pack tucked under a hat or inside a jacket.
Most people over-buy lumens. Three hundred regulated lumens with a red mode and a lock covers 90 percent of camp and trail use; buy the 1,000-lumen lamp only if you track game at night.
