The Mountain Equipment Tupilak Atmo Jacket aims for a niche: serious mountain use in truly foul conditions. Unlike many lightweight shells, this isn't designed as a 'just in case' layer for a day hike. It's built around Gore-Tex Pro 80D fabric throughout, which means exceptional abrasion resistance and durability for a jacket of its type. This substantial face fabric, combined with Mountain Equipment's Super Alpine fit, offers excellent layering capacity without being overly baggy. You can comfortably fit a mid-weight fleece or even a light belay jacket underneath, which is crucial for cold, static periods.

In the field, the Tupilak Atmo delivers on its promise of weather protection. The 80D Gore-Tex Pro sheds sustained rain and wind without complaint, and the robust DWR treatment holds up well. The helmet-compatible hood is a standout feature, adjusting precisely and staying put even in strong gusts, offering excellent peripheral vision. Its large chest pockets are well-placed for access with a harness or pack, and while there's no handwarmer pocket, that's a common trade-off in alpine shells designed to reduce bulk and weight. The integrated Cohaesive cord locks are intuitive and easy to operate with gloves, a small but significant detail when conditions deteriorate.

This jacket is a workhorse, not a featherweight. The 80D fabric, while durable, does mean a slight increase in weight and a less supple feel compared to 40D or even 30D shells. It's also not the most packable option if space is at an absolute premium, though for its protective capabilities, it compresses reasonably well.
