Refuge Pants

The Outdoor Research Refuge Pants are a specialized piece of insulation designed for static, cold-weather activities. Built around VerticalX™ insulation, these aren't your active layering pants; they're meant to be pulled over shell pants or worn as a primary outer layer when you're going to be stationary in chilly conditions. The 60g/m2 insulation provides a significant boost in warmth without being overly bulky, making them suitable for slipping on during an extended glassing session, setting up camp in freezing temperatures, or for extra warmth inside a sleeping bag on particularly frigid nights. The full-length side zippers are a crucial feature, allowing for easy on-off over boots and other layers without having to remove your footwear, which is a real time-saver and warmth-retainer in a winter environment.

Construction-wise, the outer fabric is a durable ripstop nylon, offering good wind resistance and shedding light moisture. While not fully waterproof, they handle snow and condensation well enough for their intended use. The elastic waistband with a drawcord keeps them secure without adding bulk, and the articulated knees provide some freedom of movement, though again, these are not designed for high-output activity.
