Waterproof Liners

Outdoor Research's Waterproof Liners are a straightforward solution for keeping your hands dry in wet conditions, primarily designed to supplement an existing glove or mitten system. They consist of a 3-layer GORE-TEX insert with Tricot lining, which is a proven combination for breathable waterproofing. These aren't meant to be worn as standalone gloves in cold weather, but rather as an insulating and protective layer inside a shell or warmer primary glove. The design prioritizes function over frills; there are no complex adjustments or features to fail.

In the field, their performance is largely dependent on the outer glove they're paired with. Inside a heavier, non-waterproof winter glove or a paddle mitt, they do an excellent job of preventing water ingress while allowing some vapor to escape, mitigating the clammy feeling often associated with waterproof barriers. The Tricot lining adds a touch of comfort and minimal insulation. They're reasonably packable, tucking away easily into a small pocket, making them a good emergency backup or an upgrade for less expensive glove systems. Durability for a thin waterproof liner is respectable, holding up to regular use inside protective outer layers.

Compared to dedicated waterproof gloves that integrate the membrane into their construction, these liners offer flexibility. You can pair them with various outer gloves depending on temperature and activity. This modularity makes them a smart choice for those who already own a range of non-waterproof outer gloves or mittens and want to add a waterproof capability without buying an entirely new pair. They perform as expected for a GORE-TEX liner – solid waterproofing and decent breathability, ideal for activities where keeping hands dry is critical, but dexterity isn't paramount.
