Approach

Ruffwear’s Approach is built on the proven framework of their Web Master harness, making it the benchmark for trail dogs carrying their own trail provisions. By integrating weight-forward saddlebags directly onto an ergonomic five-point chassis, the pack centers mass over the dog's shoulders rather than sagging across the spine. The ripstop exterior withstands relentless brush scraping and rocky scrambles without fraying prematurely. It targets dogs conditioned for full-day trail excursions and weekend overnights where carrying food, water, and waste is essential, but full expedition capacity is unnecessary.

On the trail, the radial-cut panniers create passive compression, drawing the load inward as gear shifts or food supplies dwindle. Proper fitting takes deliberate adjustment across the chest and belly straps, but once dialed, the pack stays remarkably centered during steep ascents and uneven footing. The integrated padded assistance handle is indispensable for quick lift-assists over deadfall or controlling your dog at busy trail junctions. However, because the panniers are permanently sewn to the chassis, camp downtime or stream crossings require unbuckling the entire rig to give the dog a break.

Compared to minimal trail vests, the Approach adds noticeable bulk and torso coverage, which can trap heat on exposed mid-summer treks. Conversely, it lacks the removable panniers and included hydration bladders found on the heavier, pricier Ruffwear Palisades. For dedicated trail companions tackling moderate mileage, this pack occupies the pragmatic middle: durable hardware, balanced weight distribution, and enough volume for canine essentials without encouraging dangerous overloading.
