Zodiac Plus GTX

The Scarpa Zodiac Plus GTX aims to bridge the gap between a robust hiking boot and a lighter mountaineering boot, and for the most part, it succeeds. Built on a proven last, its Perwanger suede upper, reinforced with rubber randing, offers excellent abrasion resistance and shape retention. The Gore-Tex Performance Comfort lining ensures reliable waterproofing, a non-negotiable for multi-day trips in variable conditions, while still allowing for a reasonable degree of breathability. Scarpa's Sock-Fit DV construction is a standout, providing a snug, almost custom-like fit around the ankle and tongue, which significantly reduces friction and hot spots during long ascents or descents. This makes for a more confident feel underfoot, especially when carrying a heavier pack or traversing uneven, rocky terrain.

Underneath, the Vibram Drumlin outsole, featuring a climbing zone at the toe, provides reliable grip across a range of surfaces from loose scree to wet rock. While not a fully rigid mountaineering boot, the Zodiac Plus GTX offers substantial underfoot support and torsional stiffness, making it suitable for carrying moderate to heavy loads over technical trails. It’s a good choice for those who need more support than a traditional hiking boot but don't quite need the full rigidity and bulk of a C1-rated boot. The weight, while not ultralight, is justifiable given its protective features and durable construction.
