Field Compass

The Silva Field is an introductory baseplate compass built for day hikers, scouts, and anyone who needs fundamental land navigation without unnecessary clutter. It strips backcountry orienteering down to the absolute essentials: a transparent baseplate, a liquid-damped needle, and standard topographic map scales. For navigating trails, taking quick bearings, or serving as a reliable analog backup to a GPS or smartphone mapping app, it hits the critical marks.

Built from durable transparent acrylic, the baseplate sits flat across a paper map, allowing clear visibility of contour lines and terrain features. The rotating dial features a textured grip that turns smoothly even with cold fingers or lightweight gloves. While the needle dampening settles fast enough for routine checks along a trail, it lacks the rapid settling speed of higher-end global needles. Measuring scales molded directly into the baseplate cover standard 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 map grids alongside a basic millimeter ruler.

In terms of durability, the capsule holds up well to standard pack jostling, though prolonged exposure to direct heat or extreme freezing temperatures can occasionally produce bubbles over time. Its main functional limitation is the lack of a tool-adjusted declination gear; users must calculate local magnetic variation manually using the printed interior scale. Against mirrored sighting models or advanced expedition compasses, it gives up precision, but for weight-conscious hikers and casual woodland navigation, its simplicity is a solid asset.
