Ranger 2.0

A mirror-sighting layout targets backcountry travelers who need precise bearings beyond basic trail-following. Built as a practical evolution of an old navigation standard, this compass pairs transparent baseplate map utility with accurate distant-object sighting. It avoids unnecessary gimmicks, focusing instead on clear sightlines, reliable dampening, and reliable operation across shifting weather conditions.

The protective folding lid shields the fluid-filled capsule while housing the sighting mirror. A textured rubber ring around the bezel provides positive purchase when setting bearings with damp hands or heavy winter gloves, while the internal declination scale simplifies heading corrections in the field. On paper topographic sheets, the extended straight edges and integrated measuring scales make plotting multi-leg routes and measuring distances straightforward.

While mirror-sighting compasses inherently carry more bulk than minimalist clear baseplates, the profile remains flat enough to ride easily in a jacket or pack lid. The plastic hinge and mirror require reasonable care against grit and crushing forces, but durability is consistent with peer models like the Suunto MC-2. For navigators needing dependable triangulation without paying for heavy sighting prisms, this tool sits squarely in the sweet spot of capability and weight.
