The verdict

The Kiln Long John is First Lite’s midweight merino bottom for cold hunts that mix hiking with long sits. First Lite specifies 250gsm Merino-X built from 17.5-micron wool in a lofted interlock knit, a functional fly, flatlock seams and a 20–60°F listed range. That makes it a sensible single base-layer bottom for mid and late season, but it is not a substitute for insulated outer layers on a frigid stand. Wild10 has not field-tested this piece, so warmth and durability notes are manufacturer-informed, not our own results.

First Lite listed this piece at $110 on October 19, 2026. Check Amazon for the current price, seller, size and color; Amazon stock and checkout have not been independently verified.

Key strengths

  • 250gsm midweight Merino-X with 17.5-micron merino listed by First Lite
  • Lofted interlock knit intended for warmth while active or stationary
  • Functional fly and jacquard waistband
  • Flatlock seams and next-to-skin fit to reduce chafing
  • Machine wash, line dry; five colors and S–XXXL sizing

Watch out for

  • Midweight warmth can feel hot on warm early-season climbs
  • Merino is generally less abrasion-resistant than synthetic base layers
  • Must be line dried; high-heat dryers can shrink wool
  • The 20–60°F range is a guide, not a guarantee for long cold sits
  • Premium price compared with synthetic long underwear

Best for

  • Mid- and late-season hunters who alternate climbing and glassing
  • Hunters wanting one quiet, odor-resistant next-to-skin bottom
  • Layering systems that add insulated pants over a base layer

Where the Kiln fits in First Lite’s merino lineup

First Lite builds its Kiln pieces around 250gsm midweight fabric and positions the Long John for persistent cold and hunts with varying activity. That middle ground matters: lighter merino can feel thin when you stop to glass, while heavy pieces can soak you on a steep climb.

If most of your season is warm scouting or early archery, a lighter base layer may serve better. If you sit for hours in single digits, plan to add insulated pants over the Kiln rather than relying on it alone.

Fabric: 250gsm Merino-X and 17.5-micron wool

First Lite lists 17.5-micron ultrafine merino, which is fine enough that most wearers find it soft against skin, in a lofted interlock knit. The company also lists 37.5 Active Particle Technology to move moisture and help regulate core temperature.

Merino’s natural odor resistance and quiet surface are practical reasons hunters choose it for multi-day trips. We have not measured drying time, pilling or how the fabric holds up after a full season of use.

Fit, sizing and layering

First Lite says the Long John runs true to size and is meant to be worn in your normal size under or over other layers. It has a next-to-skin fit, flatlock seams, a jacquard waistband and a functional fly.

Try them on with the pants you will wear over them. Check that the waistband sits comfortably under a hip belt and that the fabric does not bunch at the knee when you step up. Confirm the size and color on the Amazon listing match what you want before ordering.

Temperature range: what 20–60°F does and does not mean

First Lite lists a 20°F to 60°F range. Treat it as a guide for a base layer in a full clothing system, not a promise of comfort at 20°F in base layers alone. Activity level, wind, moisture and how long you stay still all change how warm you feel.

Near the top of the range on a steep climb, many hunters will find a midweight bottom too warm and may prefer to pack it for the sit.

Care and long-term ownership

First Lite’s care instruction is machine wash and line dry. Avoid high heat; wool can shrink or felt. Washing inside out on a gentle cycle is a common way to reduce pilling, though First Lite’s product page does not specify it.
