The verdict
The Hamra Professional is the best cold-weather hunting pant I own: exceptionally quiet, impressively rugged and, in the made-to-measure version, fitted better than any outdoor pant I have worn. Micklagaard's customer service turned my sizing mistake into one of my best gear-buying experiences by discounting the replacement and building a custom, unlined pair in time for my trip. The price and overseas shipping demand careful measuring, but the quality, fit and personal service make these special.

A Swedish family workshop, not a mass-market brand
Micklagaard was founded in 1993 by Jan and Anette Gullberg, two hunters and outdoor people who were dissatisfied with the clothing available to them. According to the company's history, they bought the Swedish army's remaining stock of wadmal and began designing and sewing the kind of clothing they wanted to wear themselves.
More than 30 years later, Micklagaard still describes itself as a family workshop rather than a factory. It remains based in Hagfors, Sweden, with Jan and Anette involved in design and production. That small-company character showed up in my order: I was treated like a person with a problem to solve, not an order number.

What Swedish wadmal brings to the field
Wadmal — vadmal in Swedish — is woven wool that is fulled with water and mechanical action until it becomes dense and hard-wearing. It is part of a long Scandinavian clothing tradition, valued because the compacted cloth blocks wind, sheds light moisture and stays quiet when it brushes against vegetation.
Micklagaard's version is a substantial Swedish-made fabric: 80% wool and 20% rayon at 840 grams per square meter. The company describes it as soft, non-itchy, breathable, quick-drying, wind- and water-resistant. It feels nothing like a thin merino base layer; this is dense outerwear cloth intended for difficult weather and years of use.

The Hamra Professional is built for hard use
These are serious field trousers, not lightweight hiking pants. Micklagaard doubles the wool over the knees, inner ankles and seat, then uses Swedish vegetable-tanned reindeer leather around the pockets, waistband adjustment and belt loops. The metal buttons are stainless steel and the zippers are YKK.
The design is practical rather than decorative: a high adjustable waist, suspender buttons, two front pockets, two flapped leg pockets, an integrated knife pocket, a back pocket, articulated knees and side ventilation zippers. The details explain why the pants feel so secure and purposeful in brush and around camp.

Custom sizing is the feature that sets them apart
Micklagaard offers the Hamra Professional in European sizes 44 through 60, but the made-to-measure option is the real standout. The company provides separate sizing charts and measurement videos led by founder and cutter Jan Gullberg, then builds the garment around the measurements you supply.
My custom pair fits like it belongs to me because it was actually made for me. The high waist sits correctly with suspenders, the legs have room to step over deadfall and kneel, and nothing binds. That fit changes how the pants feel over a full day; they are heavy-duty without feeling clumsy.

Great customer service after I ordered the wrong size
I made the mistake Micklagaard's measurement guides are designed to prevent: I ordered the wrong standard size. Sending a heavy wool garment back to Sweden was slow, frustrating and expensive, especially with my November Sylvania Wilderness trip getting closer.
This is where Micklagaard earned my loyalty. They gave me a discount to help offset the shipping expense, took my measurements and made a new custom pair that arrived in time for the trip. The fit was outstanding. That was genuinely great customer service, and it turned a difficult international return into a strong recommendation for the company.
My advice is still to measure carefully before ordering. Overseas shipping is a meaningful part of the total cost, and the made-to-measure option is worth considering before you guess at a standard size.

My lining choice: less insulation, more versatility
The original pair had Micklagaard's foam-quilted lining, and for the way I move outdoors it was simply too warm. Even in November, still-hunting, hiking and carrying a pack generated enough heat that I overheated quickly.
For the custom pair, Micklagaard left the foam lining out at my request. That was the right decision for me. The dense wadmal is already warm, and the side zippers provide useful ventilation when I am working hard. I can add a base layer for long stationary periods instead of carrying the lining on every mile.

Quiet pockets, protection and movement in the field
The silence is immediately noticeable. Wadmal does not swish like many synthetic hunting pants, which makes the Hamra Professional an excellent choice for still-hunting and any situation where quiet movement matters.
The pockets are equally good. The flapped leg pockets keep small gear secure, the integrated knife pocket is where I want it and the reinforced ankles stand up to boots and brush. These are hunting pants first, but the same qualities work for winter camping, late-season paddling, bushcraft and almost any cold-weather outdoor adventure.

Value and the Micklagaard gear I want next
The Hamra Professional is not an impulse buy, and shipping from Sweden adds enough that you should calculate the full delivered cost before ordering. Current pricing is on Micklagaard's product page, where you can also compare the standard sizes against the made-to-measure option.
I still think they are worth it. The combination of dense wadmal, thoughtful reinforcement, real custom sizing and personal service feels very different from buying another pair of disposable technical pants. Measure carefully and choose the lining for how you actually move, not just the coldest temperature you expect.
The strongest endorsement I can give is that I am already planning another order. Micklagaard makes vests, jackets, capes, shirts, knickers, leather gear and accessories in addition to trousers. Next year I plan to buy one of the vests and an Anorak Abisko, the roomy hooded wadmal anorak Micklagaard identifies as its best seller.
