For most North American backcountry water sources (streams, lakes, springs above 2,000m without livestock), a hollow-fiber squeeze filter like the Sawyer Squeeze is the standard: 3-log Cryptosporidium removal, sub-100g, negligible cost per liter. Add chlorine dioxide tablets as a freeze-safe backup.
Do I need to worry about viruses?+
Viruses (Norovirus, Hepatitis A, Rotavirus) are the primary concern for international travel and any water source downstream of human habitation. In remote North American wilderness, virus risk is low but non-zero. UV purifiers and chemical treatments handle viruses; filters do not.
What's the actual difference between a 'filter' and a 'purifier'?+
Regulatory definition (EPA): a purifier must inactivate viruses (>4 log reduction), bacteria (>6 log), and protozoa (>3 log). A filter is only required to handle bacteria and protozoa. Every UV device, chemical treatment, and RO pump on this page qualifies as a purifier; hollow-fiber and pump filters do not.
