Hunting District 314 (Madison Range)

HD 314, located in the Madison Range, is another top-tier public land elk destination, offering a mix of timbered slopes, high-elevation parks, and sagebrush foothills. Much of this unit is accessible via the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. It's a popular choice for good reason: consistent elk numbers and a reputation for producing quality bulls. This unit sees significant hunting pressure, particularly on its eastern slope close to Bozeman and Ennis, but going deeper into the backcountry still yields success. Access is generally good via forest service roads, though some areas require more significant hiking or horse packing. The terrain is varied, from rolling hills to steep mountainsides, offering options for different fitness levels. Early archery season in the high country, or rifle season after elk have been pushed by snow, can be very productive. Be prepared to glass extensively and cover ground. Understanding private land boundaries, especially in the lower elevations, is crucial. Best access is from Highway 287 through the Madison Valley or from the Tobacco Root Mountains to the west. Ideal seasons are the rut during archery and the mid-to-late general rifle season as elk migrate. Skill level is moderate to advanced; familiarity with maps and private/public boundaries is essential. Permits are standard general tags. Trade-offs include high hunting pressure in accessible areas and a checkerboard of public/private land that requires careful navigation.
