Basswood Lake via Prairie Portage (Entry Point 25, Moose Lake)

Similar to the Knife Lake route, this trip leverages the Moose Lake entry point and towboats to shorten the initial paddle, but aims for Basswood Lake. Prairie Portage, though popular, is a short and easy carry from Ensign Lake into Basswood. Basswood Lake is massive and straddles the US-Canada border. Its sheer size means that despite its popularity, finding solitude is entirely possible by exploring its many arms and bays. The lake is renowned for its fishing (walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike). There are numerous island campsites offering incredible views. Nearest town is Ely. Navigating Basswood requires good map skills and careful attention to wind, as it can generate significant waves. Expect to see some other groups, especially near portages, but the vastness of the lake allows for escape. This route is excellent for those who appreciate large water and the feeling of endless exploration.
