Hunting District 530

HD 530, covering portions of the Custer Gallatin National Forest and primarily the Crazy Mountains, offers a unique public land elk hunting experience. The Crazy Mountains are an island range, characterized by dramatic, steep peaks, alpine lakes, and timbered slopes, surrounded by private ranchland. Big Timber and Livingston are the nearest towns. Public access is limited to a few trailheads, often requiring long hikes through private land easements or designated public access points. Once on public land, the hunting can be excellent, with healthy elk populations. Archery season can be productive in the high country, and rifle season sees elk pushed to lower, often more accessible, areas by snow. This unit is physically demanding due to the steep terrain and high elevations. Hunters need to be aware of private land boundaries and respect access easements. While grizzly bears are present, their densities are lower than in western Montana. Expect variable weather and plan for self-sufficiency in this remote, rugged range.
