Why it made the list
A Minnesota original that has not needed redesigning since 1962. The aluminum frame collapses into the blade guard, and the triangular geometry is stiff enough to lean into. Boundary Waters standard issue.
Pros
- Nearly indestructible aluminum frame
- Collapses into its own blade guard
- Made in the USA, decades of service life
Cons
- Assembly takes both hands
- Blade is slower than modern Japanese teeth
Best uses
- Canoe country trips
- Family and scout camps
- A saw you hand down
