Situated near Bozeman, HD 380 covers parts of the Gallatin National Forest. This unit is popular due to its proximity to population centers and good public land access, but it consistently produces quality bulls. The terrain varies from timbered slopes to open parks and high alpine basins. Access points are numerous off US-191 and I-90. Early season (archery and general rifle) can be pressured, but consistent effort and willingness to hike away from roads pays off. Late season often concentrates elk as snow pushes them down. Winter range can be productive but requires specialized tactics. This unit is a good balance of accessibility and opportunity for the dedicated hunter. Expect other hunters, especially on weekends.
