You can hand a bin of twenty replacement axe handles to a professional restorer and watch them reject seventeen without picking most of them up. It's not snobbery. A handle is a spring, a lever, and a shock absorber, and small variations in the wood turn a decent tool into a great one — or a dangerous one.
Here's what to actually look at when you're choosing one.
1. Grain orientation, top to bottom
Hold the handle up and look at the end of the swell. You want the growth rings running parallel to the striking direction, not perpendicular. Grain that runs the "long way" through the handle spreads impact along the length of the fibers; grain that runs the wrong way turns each swing into a splitting force on the handle itself.
Most commercial handles are stamped out with no regard for grain orientation. Reject anything with rings running across the strike axis, no matter how pretty the rest looks.
2. Grain runout, end to end
Sight down the length of the handle. You want the grain lines running straight from swell to fawn's foot, parallel to the handle's long axis. Grain that "runs out" — starts on one face and exits on another partway down — creates a weak point. The handle will snap there, and it always happens on a hard swing in cold weather.
A little bit of runout at the very end of the swell is tolerable. Runout in the shaft, the neck, or under the eye is a hard no.
3. Species
In North America, straight-grained American hickory is the standard for good reason: high shock resistance, good weight, forgiving to shape. White ash is the classic European choice and behaves similarly, a touch lighter and slightly less shock-tough. Both are good.

Avoid handles labeled generically as "hardwood." That's often birch, poplar, or a mix of whatever was on the mill floor. Fine for a garden mattock, wrong for an axe.
4. Growth ring count
Dense hickory with 8–20 rings per inch behaves best. Very slow-growth wood (30+ rings per inch) can be brittle. Very fast-growth wood (fewer than 6) is soft and springy in a bad way. Rings should be reasonably uniform across the cross section — a handle with three tight rings on one side and wide loose ones on the other has grown unevenly and will behave unevenly.
5. Color and finish
Commercial handles are usually lacquered. That looks nice on the store shelf but is terrible for grip and hides defects. Plan on sanding the lacquer off any handle you buy, back to bare wood, and finishing it yourself. This is also the only reliable way to see the grain clearly, so you can catch runout the manufacturer painted over.
Heartwood versus sapwood doesn't matter much for strength — both work. Consistent color across the handle is a sign of a straight, uniform piece.
6. Shape
Shape is personal. A pronounced fawn's foot at the butt helps you feel where the handle ends in a full swing. A single-bit felling handle is longer and more curved than a hatchet handle for a reason — the curve loads the arms differently on the follow-through. Try to match the handle profile to how the axe originally shipped, or you'll be re-learning the swing.
The five-second test
At a store: pick up the handle, sight down its length, look at the swell end grain. If the rings run the right direction and the grain runs straight, it's a candidate. If either is wrong, put it back and try another. On a good day at a good supplier you might find three keepers out of a bin of twenty. That's normal.
