The Black Diamond Apex Gaiter is a no-nonsense, burly option built for demanding winter conditions. Unlike lightweight trail gaiters, this model focuses on providing robust protection against deep snow, ice, and persistent abrasion. Its primary construction utilizes a two-layer Pertex Shield Plus fabric, known for its waterproof-breathable properties and decent durability without being overly stiff. The lower section incorporates a more abrasion-resistant nylon, which is critical for fending off ski edges, crampon points, and sharp ice. The fit is generous, accommodating bulkier winter boots and mountaineering footwear, which is a key consideration for its intended use.

In the field, the Apex Gaiter proves reliable. The full-length front zipper, protected by a hook-and-loop flap, makes them easy to get on and off, even with gloves. The adjustable top strap and elasticized ankle cinch help keep snow from migrating down into your boots, though like any gaiter, a perfect seal isn't always achievable in very deep powder. The underfoot strap is a thick, replaceable Hypalon, which is a good sign for longevity compared to thinner elastic or nylon straps found on lighter models.
