The upper half is a breathable 3-layer waterproof fabric, which sheds snow and rain effectively while preventing that clammy feeling. Down low, where things take a beating, Hillsound has gone with a burly Schoeller Keprotec fabric – a smart choice that offers good resistance against sharp rocks, ice, and thorns. The overall construction feels solid, with well-stitched seams and a robust Hypalon instep strap that generally holds up better than rubber alternatives, though it’s still the first point of wear on any gaiter.

In the field, these gaiters perform as advertised. They keep debris, snow, and light moisture out of your boots, and the front-entry zipper makes them relatively easy to get on and off, even with gloves on. The top closure is a simple but effective cam buckle, allowing for quick adjustments. While not ultralight, they're certainly not heavy, and they pack down reasonably well for their level of protection. They hit a good balance for backpackers, day hikers, and even some light mountaineering or snowshoeing where full winter gaiters are overkill but a flimsy trail gaiter won’t cut it. Compared to lighter options, you're getting a significant durability upgrade without a huge weight penalty.

Durability is where the Armadillo LT really shines for its class. The Keprotec lower half is genuinely impressive at fending off cuts and abrasions. I’ve put these through sharp scree and dense bush, and they’ve held up better than many competitors at this price point. The stainless steel lace hook is a small but appreciated detail that won’t bend or break easily. While no gaiter is truly indestructible, the Armadillo LT offers a solid season or two of hard use, if not more, before showing significant signs of wear beyond the instep strap. They're a dependable workhorse for anyone who regularly encounters varied, challenging terrain.
