A hunting firearm is a rifle or shotgun chosen for a species and a landscape — bolt actions for big game at distance, repeaters and break actions for birds, and slug or straight-wall guns where regulations require them.
Deer, elk and big game hunters choosing a first or last rifle, upland and waterfowl hunters matching a shotgun to their birds, and hunters in shotgun-only or straight-wall states.
Match the cartridge to the animal and the distance you actually shoot. 12 gauge for waterfowl and turkeys, 20 gauge for most upland walking.
A 6.5 lb mountain rifle carries beautifully and kicks hard. An 8 lb rifle shoots better from field positions. Choose your discomfort.
Bolt actions are simplest and most accurate; gas semi-autos tame recoil for waterfowl; over-unders shine for upland and clays.
Length of pull and comb height decide whether you shoot well. Adjustable stocks and shims are worth more than a premium barrel.
| Hunt | Firearm | Chambering | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whitetail, all-round rifle | Lightweight bolt action | 6.5 Creedmoor / .308 Win | Under 7.5 lb scoped |
| Elk and mountain hunts | Carbon or synthetic bolt | .300 Win Mag / 7mm PRC | Weatherproof stock |
| Shotgun-only deer states | Rifled-barrel slug gun | 12 or 20 gauge sabot | Optic-ready receiver |
| Waterfowl | Gas semi-auto | 12 gauge 3" | Reliable when frozen and dirty |
| Upland walking | Over-under or light semi | 20 gauge | Balance between the hands |
| Turkey | Dedicated turkey gun | 12 or 20 gauge | Extra-full choke, optic |
| Type | Typical weight | Recoil | Maintenance | Best distance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ultralight bolt rifle | 5.5–6.5 lb | Sharp | Low | To 400 yd |
| Standard bolt rifle | 7–8.5 lb | Moderate | Low | To 500 yd |
| Gas semi-auto shotgun | 7–7.75 lb | Soft | Higher | To 45 yd |
| Inertia semi-auto shotgun | 6.75–7.25 lb | Firmer | Low | To 45 yd |
| Over-under shotgun | 6.5–7.5 lb | Moderate | Low | To 40 yd |
| Rifled slug gun | 7.5–8.5 lb | Heavy | Low | To 150 yd |
Freezing waterfowl marshes reward inertia actions and dry lubricant; sustained rain rewards stainless barrels and synthetic or carbon stocks. Wood and blued steel are beautiful and demand attention after every wet day.
Fit first, cartridge second. A rifle you can hold steady from a kneeling position beats a magnum you flinch with, and a shotgun that comes up on your eye beats a more expensive one that does not.
