The TOPS Hoffman Harpoon is a compact, no-nonsense fixed-blade knife that punches above its weight class in terms of utility and toughness. Designed by military veteran Matt Hoffman, it’s built around the principle of maximum function in a minimal package. The core is a single piece of 1095 high-carbon steel, heat-treated to an RC 56-58, which is standard for robust field knives from TOPS. This material choice means it takes a very keen edge and is relatively easy to resharpen in the field, though it does require basic maintenance to prevent rust, especially in humid or coastal environments. The differential heat treat is evident in the blade's resilience under stress. Its most distinctive feature is the harpoon-style blade, which provides a strong, acute point for piercing while retaining a substantial belly for slicing tasks. The finger choil and jimping on the spine offer a surprising amount of control for such a small knife, allowing for detailed work despite its overall stoutness. The full tang construction, combined with the micarta scales, makes for a solid and comfortable grip, even when wet. It's a knife that feels like an extension of your hand, not a tool you're fighting to control. The Kydex sheath is well-fitted and offers secure retention, with various mounting options thanks to its ambidextrous clip plate. In real-world use, this knife shines as a capable utility blade for general camp chores, cordage work, feather sticking, and even light batoning if absolutely necessary. While it’s not a primary bushcraft knife, its robust build and practical blade shape make it a dependable secondary or 'always-on-you' tool.
