The verdict

The M7 Jacket is Stone Glacier's answer to the coldest part of the season: a waterproof, windproof softshell with the insulation built in, so you shed and add layers less often when the temperature drops. At 1 lb 6.4 oz it is not an ultralight rain shell — it is a deliberate cold-weather tool, and the pit zips keep it usable when the hike in heats you up. If your season runs into snow and single digits, this is the SG shell to look at; for milder wet weather, the lighter M5 system is the better fit.

Listed at $450 (past-season colors have appeared at $337.50) — see Stone Glacier's product page for current pricing

What I love

  • HydraShield Softshell laminate is waterproof, windproof and breathable
  • Fleece interior adds real warmth without a separate insulating layer
  • Dual pit zips dump heat fast on the move
  • Fully articulated hood protects without blocking peripheral vision
  • Hand pockets sit high enough to use while wearing a pack
  • Mechanical stretch keeps movement quiet and fluid

Watch out for

  • Heavier and warmer than a light rain shell — overkill for mild, wet days
  • Past-season availability means limited colors and sizes
  • DWR is made with PFAS chemicals, which some buyers prefer to avoid

Best for

  • Late-season hunts in snow, wind and frigid temperatures
  • Glassing and long sits where built-in insulation matters
  • Hunters who want one shell that replaces a shell-plus-insulation stack

What the M7 is built for

Stone Glacier positions the M7 as its late-season system: an ultra-warm, windproof and breathable shell worn over mid-layers or insulation in cold, snowy conditions. Where the lighter M5 is a packable rain shell, the M7 pairs the same HydraShield waterproof laminate with a fleece interior, so warmth and weather protection come in one piece.

The idea is fewer layer changes. On a frigid sit you stay warm; on the hike, dual pit zips vent heat instantly instead of stopping to strip a layer.

Fabric and construction

The shell is Stone Glacier's HydraShield Softshell: a polyester face over a waterproof-breathable laminate with a fleece interior. The face sheds snow and stands up to abrasion, the laminate keeps meltwater out, and the fleece holds heat. Mechanical stretch runs through the fabric, which keeps the jacket quiet and lets it move with you when climbing or shouldering a rifle or bow.

Zippers are #5 YKK Aquaguard Vislon throughout, the hood is fully articulated with two cinch shock-cord lockers, and the hand pockets are placed high so they stay usable under a pack hip belt.

M7 vs M5 — which shell system?

Stone Glacier's own guidance comes down to temperature. The M5 is the lightweight, packable rain system for milder conditions and high-exertion days; the M7 is the insulated system for bitter cold. If your hunts run from early-season heat into November snow, many owners end up with both — but if you can only pick one, pick by the coldest conditions you actually hunt in.

Verdict

A purpose-built late-season shell: warm, quiet, genuinely waterproof and cut for movement. It costs more and weighs more than a bare rain shell, and it is meant to — this is the piece you reach for when the season turns bitter. Complete the kit with the matching M7 Pant.
