Moss and Lichen

Algae Growth

Slimy, green or black streaks on rock, especially near potential pooling areas, are definite signs of water. This is algal growth, and it means persistent moisture is present.

The Targets: Seeps, Springs, and Tinajas

Once you've read the geology and vegetation, you'll be looking for these specific features:

Seep Springs

Seeps are where groundwater slowly oozes out of a rock face. They can be incredibly subtle, sometimes just a consistently damp patch of rock supporting a few ferns. They're often found in shaded, north-facing alcoves or under overhangs where evaporation is minimized.

  • Collection: Seeps might require patient collection. A bandanna or sponge can absorb water from a damp area, which you can then wring into a bottle. Sometimes, a small depression can be dug below the seep to create a pooling area.

Tinajas (Water Pockets)

Tinajas are natural potholes or depressions in bedrock that collect and hold rainwater. They vary in size from small puddles to pools large enough to swim in. They are most common in slickrock drainages.

  • Location: Look for them in the bottoms of washes, especially where the bedrock is exposed and resistant to erosion. They often form in stair-step patterns or at the base of small drops.
  • Persistence: Deeper, more shaded tinajas will hold water longer after rainfall. Check under ledges or in narrow, slot-like sections.
  • Purity: Tinaja water can be murky, filled with sediment, or contaminated by animal use. Always filter and purify. If possible, take water from the deepest part of the pool to avoid surface scum.

Canyon country water sources are highly seasonal. What's a gushing spring in spring might be a dry patch in late summer. Always check recent reports, local ranger stations, or trusted online forums for current water conditions before your trip.

Conservation and Respect

When you find water, remember it's a precious resource. Take only what you need. Avoid contaminating the source with sunscreen, insect repellent, or human waste. If collecting from a small seep or tinaja, try to minimize disturbance to the surrounding vegetation and avoid stirring up sediment.
