Upland hunting is walking gear first and gun second: boots that survive twelve miles of CRP, brush pants, a vest that carries water and birds, and a light shotgun you can swing after all of it.
Pheasant, grouse, quail, chukar and woodcock hunters, with or without a dog.
Six to seven pounds in 12, 16, 20 or 28 gauge. Weight you carry all day matters more than pattern density.
Uninsulated 6-inch for early quail, insulated 8-inch for late pheasant, stiff shanks for chukar country.
Two litres of water, a box of shells, a game bag that washes out, and a blaze panel your partners can see.
Collar, e-collar or beeper, and a check cord. Add a chest protector for thorny country and boots for cheatgrass.

| Bobwhite quail | 20 or 28 ga | Cylinder / IC | #8 | Pine savanna, field edges |

| Action | Weight | Follow-up shots | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Over/under | 6.5–7.5 lb | Two, instant choke choice | High | Grouse and quail |
| Side-by-side | 6–7 lb | Two | High | Traditional upland |
| Semi-auto | 6.5–7.5 lb | Three | Moderate | Late-season pheasant |
| Pump | 7–7.5 lb | Three | Low | All-weather budget gun |
Early-season heat is a dog problem, not a hunter problem: carry more water than you think and hunt the first two hours. Late-season prairie wind justifies a windproof brush pant far more than an extra layer on top.
Upland vests should sit high enough that the game bag doesn't slap your legs when it fills. Try boots with the sock weight you'll hunt in and expect a half size up over your street shoe.
