Squeeze

The Sawyer Squeeze has earned its reputation as the benchmark for lightweight, reliable water filtration for good reason. Its hollow fiber membrane filter effectively removes 99.99999% of all bacteria (like salmonella, cholera, and E.coli) and 99.9999% of all protozoa (like giardia and cryptosporidium), meeting EPA standards for potable water. The simplicity of its design, essentially a filter attached to a squeeze pouch, is its greatest strength in the field. It’s incredibly easy to use: fill the pouch, attach the filter, and squeeze clean water into your bottle or mouth.

Construction is straightforward and durable. The filter unit itself is robust plastic, and while the included pouches are notorious for eventually failing at the seams after repeated use, they are readily replaceable with standard PET soda bottles. While it doesn't filter viruses (few backcountry filters do without UV or chemicals), for North American and European trail use, it handles the vast majority of waterborne pathogens. Compared to heavier pump filters or slower gravity systems, the Squeeze offers an excellent balance of speed, weight, and effectiveness, setting a high bar for portable water treatment.
