Pack Weight Budget Planner
Separate base weight from consumables, see day-one total load against the 20 percent body-weight rule, and get an ordered checklist of the pounds worth cutting first.
Your cut list, heaviest first
The big three — pack, shelter, sleep system — currently total 10 lb. That is usually where the real pounds live.
- 1. Carry less water between sourcessaves about 2.2 lb
Every liter is 2.2 lb. On a well-watered route, one liter carried plus a filter beats three liters carried.
- 2. Audit clothing and extrassaves about 1 lb
Most hikers carry a spare set they never wear. Keep one insulating layer, one shell, sleep socks.
- 3. Denser caloriessaves about 1 lb
Targeting 125 calories per ounce instead of 100 cuts roughly a fifth of the food weight.
- 4. Trim the kitchensaves about 0.8 lb
An integrated canister stove, one pot, and one spoon covers nearly every trip under 1.2 lb.
- 5. Lighter packsaves about 0.5 lb
A frameless or minimal-frame pack in the 2 to 2.5 lb range carries a sub-20 lb load comfortably.
- 6. Lighter sheltersaves about 0.5 lb
A trekking-pole tent or a two-person double-wall in the 2 to 2.5 lb range is the usual swap.
- 7. Lighter sleep systemsaves about 0.5 lb
A quilt plus a 12 to 14 oz inflatable pad typically lands the pair near 3.5 lb.

Pack weight questions
- What is base weight versus total pack weight?
- Base weight is everything in and on your pack that you do not consume: pack, shelter, sleep system, clothing, cook kit, electronics, first aid. Total weight adds consumables — food, water, and fuel — which shrink as you walk.
- How much should my pack weigh?
- A widely used rule is that total pack weight should stay at or under 20 percent of your body weight, and ideally closer to 15 percent for long days or steep terrain. This planner shows both thresholds against your real numbers.
- What counts as ultralight?
- Roughly: under 10 lb base weight is ultralight, 10–20 lb is lightweight, and over 20 lb is traditional. Those numbers are conventions, not rules — a winter trip has a legitimately heavier base weight than a summer overnight.
- How much food should I plan per day?
- Most backpackers plan 1.5 to 2 pounds of food per person per day, or 3,000 to 4,500 calories depending on effort and temperature. Aim for 100 or more calories per ounce so weight buys energy.
- How much does water weigh?
- One liter of water weighs about 2.2 pounds. Carrying capacity between reliable sources rather than a full load is usually the single fastest way to drop pounds.
