Sylvania camping is site-specific. There are 50 numbered campsites listed on Recreation.gov, each tied to a named lake, and your permit is for that exact site — not for the wilderness generally. Decide the lake first using the campsite guide and the portage directory, then reserve.
Sylvania Wilderness backcountry sites are booked through the Recreation.gov listing. Book the full set of nights before you leave home; there is no reliable way to change a reservation once you are on the water without cell service.
Release windows, nightly fees, day-use fees and any reservation service charge are set by the agency and change between seasons. Read the current amounts on the Recreation.gov listing rather than trusting any number republished elsewhere, including this page.
Before you drive, check the forest alerts page for road, gate, entrance-station, fire-restriction and closure notices. Off-season trips in particular can meet unplowed access roads and a closed contact station.
Print the reservation and keep a copy in a dry bag; phones die and there is no signal on most interior lakes. Leave a copy of your campsite numbers, launch point and take-out time with someone at home.
A camping permit does not cover fishing. Sylvania also carries special catch-and-release and size regulations beyond the statewide rules — read the current Michigan DNR posting before you keep anything.
