The country
The Great Karoo is a semidesert of roughly 400,000 square kilometres across South Africa's interior, mostly in the Western Cape northeast of Cape Town — a larger, hillier Upper Karoo and a smaller, flatter Lower Karoo. Its name is said to come from an Afrikaans word for 'hard' or 'dry', or from an older San word meaning 'land of thirst'. The region has been home to the Indigenous San hunter-gatherers and the pastoral Khoekhoe for centuries.
Why the show came here
After eleven cold-weather seasons — nine of them in Canada — Season 12 ('Alone: Africa') broke the format open: the show's first season in Africa and its first in a semidesert. The production worked with local Indigenous communities on land use, and the survival problem flipped from cold to water. As the show's lead survival consultant Dave Holder put it, staying hydrated takes up a great deal of the day — and ten new participants, no veterans, had to learn that fast. Nathan Olsen outlasted the field to win.
Planner-relevant notes
Everything starts with water: carry capacity, source mapping, and shade discipline beat almost every other skill here. Shelter is about heat rejection by day, not warmth — though semidesert nights still get cold. Foraging is slow and sparse; game is plentiful in places but demands real distance in open country.
Field notes
- Hydration is a scheduled task, not a reaction — drink before you feel thirsty.
- Shade is infrastructure: build for midday sun before anything else.
- Distances deceive in open country; budget far more water for any food run.
