Virginia Falls is a designated aircraft landing site and the common start for river trips, which Parks Canada says typically take 7–10 days from there. The route begins with a portage around the falls, then canyon whitewater: the 147 km stretch from the falls to Kraus Hot Springs holds rapids up to Class III. Downstream, the river divides into channels known as The Splits, where Parks Canada reports no rapids.
