What happened in "Fire and Famine"

Episode 11 aired August 26, 2026 — and despite what some listings say, the title is "Fire and Famine," not "World Champion." History's logline: as the Arctic winter deepens, a mistake leaves one survivalist racing to save their shelter from going up in smoke, and a brazen bear raid on a critical food source leaves another participant reeling. A severe lack of food and the pull of home force the last four to dig deeper than ever.

The four still out there: Žiga Ogorelec, Aaron Barnard, Nero Buys and Andrew Price. Jacks Genega had tapped the previous episode on day 62.

A shelter fire is the worst possible loss

Everything a contestant owns by this point in the season is inside one structure: bedding, dry clothing, tools, food stores and months of labour. In an Arctic winter a shelter fire is not a setback that costs a day — it is usually the end of the run, because there is no time and no daylight left to rebuild insulated space before the next night.

The mistake is almost always the same one. Fire moved closer to the bed as temperatures dropped, or a stove pushed harder than the surrounding material can tolerate. The colder it gets, the more contestants shrink the safety margin between heat source and combustible wall — and the less able they are to survive the consequences.

The bear raid, and why it ends seasons

A bear raiding a critical food cache in deep winter is close to unrecoverable. The animals that filled the cache are gone or dormant, fish are under ice, daylight for hunting is a few hours, and the contestant's body is already in deficit. You cannot out-hunt that hole; you can only out-endure it.

This is the episode where Andrew Price's run effectively ends. The 51-year-old Welshman went out at day 71 from the effects of starvation — the outcome the word "famine" in the title is pointing at.

The pull of home

Late-season Alone exits split into three categories: medical pulls, gear failures and choices. By episode 11 almost everything left is the third kind. Nero Buys would later leave on day 85 with fish still coming in, saying he had done what he came to do and wanted to see his family. That is not a collapse; it is an accounting.

What separated the last two

Aaron Barnard ran one of the best traplines of the season and it kept him alive to day 87 — but hare is famously lean, and a hare-dominant diet produces a fat deficit no volume of meat corrects. He tapped from mental and physical exhaustion.

Žiga Ogorelec, a 35-year-old biologist from Slovenia, had banked big-game fat earlier in the season. That reserve is why he was still functional on day 90, when he was told he had won $500,000 and the first Alone World Championship.
