Dutch Oven recipes — FAQ

What's the best Dutch oven size for camping?

The 12-inch 6-quart camp Dutch oven is the sweet spot: enough for 6-8 people, still portable, and matches nearly every recipe on the web. Bigger 14-inch models are worth it for large groups; smaller 10-inch ovens are great for couples.

How many charcoal briquettes do I need?

The rule of thumb for 350°F is to double the oven's size in briquettes, then put two-thirds on top and one-third underneath. For a 12-inch oven that's 24 briquettes total — 16 on the lid, 8 below. Each recipe lists the exact count.

Can I use a Dutch oven on a camp stove?

Yes — for stove-top braises and stews. But baked recipes (cobblers, cinnamon rolls, cornbread) need heat from above as well as below, which is why briquettes on the lid matter. Save baking for a fire or charcoal setup.
