Foil packets — hobo dinners, tinfoil suppers, whatever your family calls them — are the fastest low-cleanup way to feed a group at camp. Layer proteins and veg on heavy-duty foil, seal tight, drop on hot coals, and eat straight from the packet 15-30 minutes later. Every recipe includes exact fold, cook time and safe-open notes.

Foil Packet recipes — FAQ

How do you cook foil packet meals over a campfire?

Build a bed of hot coals and rake them flat. Set the packets directly on the coals, flip once at the halfway mark, and pull off with tongs when meat reaches temperature. Never cook packets on open flame — the foil scorches before the food is done.

Can I make foil packets ahead of time?

Yes. Assemble packets at home, freeze them flat, then throw them in the cooler on ice. They'll thaw as they travel and cook straight from the cooler at camp. Add fresh veg or cheese at camp instead of packing them a day early.

Are foil packet recipes safe?

Yes when you use heavy-duty foil (not the standard weight), double-wrap for anything with juice, and open the packets away from your face to release steam. Compost or pack out the used foil — never bury it.
