A backpack is a load-carrying system rated by capacity (liters), suspension type (internal or external frame), and torso-length fit. Overnight backpacks range from 30 to 85 L.
Day hikers, backpackers, thru-hikers, canoeists (portage), and hunters carrying game.
20–30 L day; 45–55 L overnight; 55–70 L week; 70–85 L expedition or family gear.
Internal for load compression and body contact; external for airflow and heavy irregular loads (e.g., firewood, game meat).
Measured from C7 vertebra to iliac crest. Fit torso first, hip belt second.
Ripstop nylon (210–420D) for balance; Dyneema for weight; canvas for classic bushcraft loads.
| Trip length | Capacity | Frame | Load limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day hike | 20–30 L | Frameless / minimal | up to 15 lb |

| Multi-day / thru-hike | 55–65 L | Internal | up to 35 lb |
| Portage / expedition | 70–85 L | Internal or external | 35–60 lb |
| Fabric | Weight | Durability | Waterproof | Cost |

In wet climates, prefer waterproof fabrics or plan on a pack liner. In hot climates, look for a suspension with airflow, or you'll sweat through any pack.
Hip belt carries 80% of a well-fitted load. Torso must match spine length — women's-specific packs are usually shorter, not narrower.
