A duck rig is a decoy spread sized to the water you hunt, a call you can run softly, waders that keep you dry all morning, and a 12 or 20 gauge that cycles steel in the cold.
Timber, marsh, river and field duck hunters, and anyone buying a first spread and wader setup.
Six decoys in flooded timber, two dozen on open marsh, and mallards plus a few divers wherever both use the water.
Ripple beats realism. A jerk cord works everywhere; spinning wings help early and flare late-season birds.
Boot size and insulation matter more than brand. 800 g for walk-in marsh, 1,600 g for standing in cold water.
Single reed for range and control, double reed for easy raspy mallard talk. Match the call's volume to the water.
| Where you hunt | Decoys | Motion | Waders | Gun and choke |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flooded timber | 6–12 mallards | Jerk cord, kick water | 600–800 g boot foot | 12 ga, improved cylinder |
| Open marsh | 18–36 mixed | Spinner + jerk cord | 1,200 g insulated | 12 ga, modified |
| Big river | 12–24 divers | Longline rig | 1,600 g bootfoot | 12 ga, modified |
| Dry field mallards | 3–6 dozen fullbody / socks | Flag and spinner | Uninsulated + boots | 12 ga, improved modified |
| Small creeks and potholes | 4–8 decoys | Jerk cord | 800 g | 20 ga, improved cylinder |
| Decoy type | Realism | Packability | Durability | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard floaters | Good | Bulky | High | Everything |
| Foam-filled floaters | Good | Bulky | Very high | Shot-over spreads |
| Fullbody field | Excellent | Poor | High | Dry fields |
| Silhouettes | Fair | Excellent | High | Walk-in field hunts |
| Spinning wing | Motion only | Moderate | Moderate | Early season |
Below freezing, decoy lines ice and rubber waders stiffen — switch to breathable waders with heavy socks and carry a spare pair of gloves. In late season, cut spread size and kill the spinner; pressured birds read both.
Buy waders by boot size first, then check the inseam. A half size up leaves room for the heavy sock that actually keeps your feet warm.
