Best for
First multi-day river trip with a guide, Experienced independent paddlers
The Department of Conservation describes the full Whanganui Journey as a 145 km canoe trip from Taumarunui to Pipiriki that takes an average of five days. A shorter 88 km version starts at Whakahoro. The river was legally recognised in 2017 as Te Awa Tupua, a living whole, and paddlers are expected to treat it with respect.
Route
Day 1 Taumarunui to Ohinepane (22 km); day 2 to Whakahoro (35 km); day 3 to John Coull Hut (37.5 km); day 4 to Tīeke Kāinga (29 km); day 5 to Pipiriki (21.5 km), per DOC.
Highlights
Moss-and-fern gorges, the Ōhura Falls side trip, Tarepokiore rapid, the Bridge to Nowhere walk from Mangapurua Landing, and Tīeke Kāinga, a working marae as well as a hut.
What makes it serious
DOC says unguided paddlers should be confident swimmers with canoe experience and able to paddle 6–7 hours a day (8+ in low flows). Outside the Great Walks season it is only for people very experienced on remote NZ rivers in winter.
How to prepare
Book huts and campsites in advance for the Great Walks season, hire canoes and barrels from an operator, and choose a guided trip if you are less experienced or travelling alone.
Respect
Tamatea's Cave is wāhi tapu (sacred) — do not enter. Follow the tikanga (protocol) at Tīeke Kāinga.
How we picked
We built this ranking from trip reports, agency data, permit records, and our editors' own time on the ground. 10 places made the final cut out of a much longer working list, and each one had to clear the same set of criteria before it earned a spot.
- Quality of the terrain
- Landscape, route variety, and whether the place rewards multiple days rather than one overlook.
- Season and weather windows
- How long the reliable window is, and how badly the shoulder seasons punish a bad forecast.
- Access and permits
- Trailhead logistics, permit odds, quotas, and how much lead time a trip realistically takes.
- Solitude vs. crowding
- How far you have to walk before the place feels like wilderness instead of a queue.
- Wildlife and ecology
- What you can reasonably expect to see, and what you have to plan around.
- Risk and skill required
- Navigation, water crossings, exposure, and rescue distance — stated plainly.
