Every leg out here is exposed Lake Superior open water, and the mainland sea caves are only safe in settled conditions. The points below are fixed geographic references, not an official route: the National Park Service does not publish a numbered water trail for the crossing. The park does publish exact GPS coordinates for every island campsite, which is the list to plan your nights from.

A wilderness camping permit is required for every overnight stay in the national lakeshore, reserved in advance through Recreation.gov. Day paddling the mainland caves needs no permit, but every island night does.

Thousands of years of gathering on this shore

The Park Service frames the Apostles as a story of people rather than only islands: families gathering near the lake, sharing meals and stories over a fire — a tradition it says stretches back thousands of years, over which time Native Americans occupied the islands and surrounding area.

Traces of those lives are strewn across the islands, the Park Service writes, as dramatic as a lighthouse or fish camp and as small as a chunk of charcoal, with more stories hidden underwater in the lake's shipwrecks.
