Goose hunting is a field game: a spread big enough to be seen from altitude, layout blinds that disappear into stubble, a call that can both hail and cluck, and a gun that patterns dense at 40 yards.
Canada goose and snow goose hunters running field spreads, and hunters adding geese to an existing duck rig.
Geese pick fields from a thousand feet. Silhouettes and socks buy numbers cheaply; fullbodies sell the last hundred yards.
A layout blind is only as good as the stubble you mud and stubble it with. Flat profile beats every camo pattern.
Short-reed calls do everything but demand practice. Flute calls are forgiving and still work on fresh birds.
3-inch BB or BBB steel through improved modified kills Canadas cleanly. Pattern it; don't assume it.
| Hunt | Decoys | Blind | Call | Load |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canada geese, cut corn | 3–6 dozen fullbody | Layout, stubbled | Short reed | 3 in BB steel |
| Field feed, walk-in | 2–4 dozen silhouettes | Layout or A-frame | Short reed | 3 in BB |
| Snow geese, spring | 500+ socks / windsocks | Layout in white | E-caller where legal | 3 in BB |
| Water roost setup | 1–2 dozen floaters | Blind bag on bank | Flute | 3 in #2 |
| Small-property Canadas | 1–2 dozen fullbody | A-frame | Short reed, soft | 3 in #1 |
| Decoy | Cost per bird | Trailer space | Realism | Set-up time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fullbody | High | Large | Excellent | Slow |
| Shell | Moderate | Moderate | Very good | Moderate |
| Silhouette | Low | Minimal | Good in motion | Fast |
| Windsock | Lowest | Minimal | Good at distance | Fastest |
| Floater | Moderate | Moderate | Very good | Moderate |
Frozen ground stops decoy stakes cold — carry a cordless drill and a spike bit. In snow, swap to white socks and brush your blind with whatever the field actually holds, not last week's stubble.
Buy your layout blind to lie in with a coat on and a gun across your chest. If you can't sit up and swing without lifting the frame, the blind is too small.
