Overview

While primarily famous for its summer granite spires, Bugaboo Provincial Park offers extremely adventurous and challenging ice and mixed climbing in winter for those willing to brave the deep snow and remote access. This is not a destination for the faint of heart or the inexperienced. Access involves a demanding, often multi-day approach, typically via skis or snowshoes, to the Conrad Kain Hut. The rewards are high-alpine, committing routes on magnificent peaks. It's a true expeditionary-style experience, demanding strong mountaineering skills in addition to ice climbing proficiency. Nearest full services are in Golden, BC. The winter season is much longer, often from October through May, but the best conditions for stable snow and ice window are short and fickle. This area is strictly for expert climbers and mountaineers with extensive avalanche training, glacier travel experience, and self-rescue skills. Permits are not required for climbing, but hut reservations are necessary. Trade-offs are significant: extreme remoteness, very high avalanche danger, complex glacier travel, and highly unpredictable weather. This is an advanced objective requiring meticulous planning and a solid team.
