A hunting bow setup is a bow, an arrow matched to its spine and your draw, and a broadhead that flies to the same point as your field points. All three have to agree before anything else matters.
Bowhunters buying a first compound, traditional shooters moving to a recurve or longbow, and anyone building arrows for big game.
A bow you can draw smoothly while seated and cold beats a heavier one you can only pull standing in July.
Longer axle-to-axle is more forgiving; higher brace height is friendlier to imperfect form; short bows suit blinds and treestands.
Spine must match draw weight, draw length and point weight. Total arrow weight drives penetration more than raw bow speed.
Fixed heads for heavy bone and traditional gear; mechanicals for flat-shooting compounds. Both must be tuned to fly with field points.
| Setup | Bow | Draw weight | Arrow | Head |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First bowhunting rig | Forgiving 31-33" compound | 55–65 lb | 400–500 spine, 420 gr | Fixed 100 gr |
| Western spot-and-stalk | Lightweight compound | 65–70 lb | 300–340 spine, 450 gr | Fixed or hybrid |
| Treestand whitetail | Short axle-to-axle compound | 60–70 lb | 340 spine, 430 gr | Mechanical |
| Traditional whitetail | Takedown recurve | 45–55 lb | Wood or carbon, heavy point | Single-bevel fixed |
| Elk with traditional gear | Longbow or heavy recurve | 55–60 lb | 600+ gr total | Two-blade single bevel |
| Bow type | Learning curve | Effective range | Tuning effort | Noise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compound with release | Moderate | 40–60 yd | High | Low |
| Takedown recurve | Steep | 15–25 yd | Moderate | Moderate |
| Longbow | Steep | 15–20 yd | Low | Moderate |
| Hybrid longbow | Steep | 20–25 yd | Moderate | Low |
Cold fingers cost traditional shooters more accuracy than any equipment choice; practice with the gloves you hunt in. Rain and freezing temperatures stiffen strings and change arrow flight, so re-check your tune in season.
Most bowhunters shoot too much draw weight. Drop five to ten pounds, add arrow weight, and your penetration and accuracy both improve.
